The Heart of Wilderness Expeditions

Eugene Peterson describes the life of faith as “a long obedience in the same direction,” and he goes on to say that this requires the attitude of a pilgrim, not a tourist. Wilderness Expeditions at Bighorn are an invitation to develop the habits and character of a pilgrim, committed to the life of faith for the long haul. The challenges and responsibility involved in traveling through the wilderness can reveal what we trust in, and a community can point one another to what is true and worth trusting.

On a Wilderness Expedition, 5-10 students will travel through God’s creation with caring instructors who intentionally steward the challenges to meet the needs of the group. Scripture and spiritual disciplines are woven throughout the day while the group faces real life realities such as living in community, working together toward a goal and learning new skills. The journey may be hard, but it is worth it, as character is strengthened and a deeper knowledge of God and self is explored.

From Our Campers

"Backpacking is a great way to make new, good habits and break old, bad habits."

"I am most proud of my turn as Leader of the Day... I had to make choices for the whole group and do stuff I'd never done before, like navigation... I think that it was very good for me to be forced to step up."

Kelsey — Age 31

"Our devotional on 1 Kings 19 helped me hear God's voice for the first time in too long, and since then, I've had a sort of peace in my soul."

Tracy — Age 43
