One question that we receive often is, "Will my kids be safe at Camp Bighorn?" Surprisingly to some, our answer is no. There is an inherent and unavoidable level of risk in all of Camp's activities, which play a vital role in our ministry and assist in the cultivation of godly character among campers and staff. A "safe" environment is one where potentially dangerous activities are eliminated and because of the potential danger in our adventures, we cacnnot say that your child will be completely "safe."
We do not take issues of safety lightly however. We do our best to evaluate all potential risks and will not proceed with an event without an appropriate level of caution. We also equip our staff with the skills to facilitate each activity safely. All summer staff go through 2 weeks of training in order to prepare them to manage not only the physical risk that will be encountered but also the emotional and spiritual tension that may occur. We continue to train our staff throughout the summer, and seek to place each staff member in an appropriate leadership position for their level of preparation. In order to manage risk we also have a high staff to camper ratio in certain events, frequently one staff member for every two campers. Also, our permanent staff frequently attend training sessions in a variety of outdoor disciplines in order to be properly equipped for possible unfortunate circumstances.
